Frequently Asked Questions about Solar

Is it worth installing solar in Perth?

Chevron Down

100%, Perth is one of the best places on the planet to install roof top solar! Perth, with our amazing sunshine, is the sunniest city in Australia, with a long term average of 8.8 hours of sunshine per day. There are not many places better.

Can I really sell my excess power back to the government?

Chevron Down

Yes, in Perth with the excess electricity that you are producing, if you choose to not top up battery storage, then you can return it the the grid and earn some extra cash. This is always dependant on your unit type and size.

What are the benefits of solar power?

Chevron Down

Fantastic investment returns, increase the value of your property, protect yourself from ever increasing electricity prices, make the most of fantastic government rebates and incentives whilst they exist and last but not least, do your bit to help planet Earth!

How much will solar installation cost?

Chevron Down

Residential systems in Perth as a rough guide start at around $3,500 and go up to and beyond $15,000 dependant on your home’s needs. Commercial systems often start at closer to $10,000+ dependant on requirements of the project in question.

Approximate prices for good quality solar panel systems in Australia, including full installation, are in the range of:

  • 5 kW: $4,500 – $8,000
  • 6.6 kW: $5,500 – $9,000
  • 10 kW: $8,000 – $13,000
  • 13.3kW: $10,000 – $15,000

How much can I save with solar power?

Chevron Down

Investing in a well designed rooftop solar system can yield returns ranging from 30% to 50% of your initial investment. Consider allocating around $6000 for a top-notch system, potentially saving you approximately $2000 to $3000 annually on your power bills. Trust us, most investments won’t offer these returns!

How much power will my new home use?

Chevron Down

This is very much a case by case answer, when our clients are trying to work this out, we review past electricity use on same or previous locations, and combine this with a review and deep dive into what the future might look like for our client with changing electricity use habits, future upgrades and future electrification of other products at the property, eg hot water heat pumps, swimming pool mods, electric vehicle requirements etc.

What size solar system will I need?

Chevron Down

This answer will come from our review of your current electricity use, combined with future electricity use and future needs with a discussion on future battery solutions and electric vehicles certainly apart of the conversation.

Are there government incentives to save me money on solar?

Chevron Down

Absolutely, incentives for solar installations are available until 2030 but be aware the rebate gets lowered every year on January 1st, so there has never been a better time to install roof top solar on your home or commercial property.

What are export limits, and how do they affect my solar power?

Chevron Down

In Perth, a system over 5kW will not be eligible for being paid to export excess electricity back to the grid, in these cases many clients are instead re-diverting this extra electricity to battery storage, electric vehicles or water heating so that it is not being “wasted”.

Do I need to cover my entire roof with solar panels to get enough energy?

Chevron Down

This will certainly depend on your roof size and solar needs. However, solar panels get more efficient every year and so less and less panels are needed on ones roof as technology continues to develop.

Does solar energy completely eliminate my carbon footprint?

Chevron Down

It certainly could but this is a complex equation with many factors involved, everyone has vastly different energy needs and also different abilities to generate solar energy. It certainly is a big help in all cases though.

Where's the best place to install solar panels on my roof?

Chevron Down

Depending on the your energy needs at certain times of the day, but for most in Perth, the best orientations are generally North facing, or a combination of East and West.

In what specific ways does solar energy help the environment?

Chevron Down

Solar energy is entirely renewable, playing a crucial role in lessening our planet’s dependence on fossil fuels, notorious for their detrimental effects on the environment and long-term ecological health. Given that fossil fuels are neither sustainable nor environmentally friendly energy sources, embracing solar power is imperative for meeting our long-term energy needs sustainably.

What are small-scale technology certificates (STC's)?

Chevron Down

The solar industry benefits from a government incentive called the ‘Renewable Energy Target’ (RET). Under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, households and business owners with solar power systems up to 100kW, receive Small-Scale Technology Certificates or STCs, for every megawatt hour of renewable energy expected to be generated or displaced by a solar system. These STCs carry a monetary value. When purchasing a solar PV system, your solar company supplier will offer an ‘STC Discount’ in exchange for assigning these STC’s to them. This STC Discount was at its highest point when the scheme was first introduced back in 2011, to counteract the high price of solar energy at the time.

Overtime, in conjunction with the price of solar energy systems falling, the STC discount has shrunk as well as it is reviewed on January 1st every year. It is set to phase out completely by 2030. But until then, homeowners and business can enjoy the discount these STC’s provide, reducing the base cost of their systems when installed.

Does Western Australia Offer a Solar Rebate?

Chevron Down

It sure does, here in the West we benefit from the Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme and the savings that come from the ‘STC’ Discount’. Jump on board whilst the offer is still on the table! There are only a few years left!

Build with Solar

In the process of building a home? This is the easiest time to install solar! We work alongside builders, integrating our installation into their construction phase. By installing solar while you build, you’ll benefit from making certain electrical considerations early, such as pre-wiring conduits before your walls are finished, and enjoy potential cost savings on shared resources like scaffolding. We’ll design the future-proof system your new home deserves, ready for additions like air conditioning, pools, electric vehicles, and battery storage.

Why we always recommend you consider your solar needs before building.

By working in with roof designs we can minimise compromise on unit size and maximise system design efficiency

Chevron Down

For example we can have best roof locations clear of roof cowls, antennas, plumbing vents and so on. Roof design can possibly be altered to maximise a best fit design solution for your needs.

Minimise componentry compromise.

Chevron Down

With proper pre-construction consideration we can have inverters and batteries or future batteries and EV charging stations in the locations that YOU want, not what is left available after the event. Conduits can be pre-installed and you won’t have to compromise later. For example – it can be frustrating if you have to put components in your garage in an area that was pre planned for a workbench or bike rack.

Minimise the maintenance on your home.

Chevron Down

With installing after the event, you often have to run external conduits on exterior and interior walls or install components in high weather areas. These involve more fixings and fittings that can corrode or get damaged. This leads to another future maintenance concern and will reduce fixing or component expected lifetimes.

Improved aesthetics

Chevron Down

By proper planning in the design and construction stage, we can often improve your homes street appeal. By being able to choose roof locations and adjust roof components or minimise unsightly interior and exterior conduits we can improve the look of your home.

Utilise on site safety equipment for safer and often more cost effective install

Chevron Down

By installing solar during the build process, often the scaffold, hoists and equipment can be utilised for a safer install. This will often lead to cost savings if the home would require scaffold, crane hire, scissor lifts or elevated platforms if done post construction. Win, win!
